News Release - Town Council Approves Glendale Secondary Plan to Guide Future Growth

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is pleased to announce the approval of the updated Glendale Secondary Plan, a comprehensive framework designed to guide the area's growth and development through 2051. This plan replaces the previous 2011 version, aligning with the shared vision established in the 2020 Glendale District Plan.

The updated Secondary Plan focuses on:

  • Land Use and Built Form: Promoting compact development with a mix of uses and building types.
  • Transportation and Infrastructure: Enhancing transportation networks and service infrastructure.
  • Public Spaces and Active Transportation: Improving public areas and promoting walking and cycling.
  • Natural Heritage Protection: Safeguarding natural and rural features in the area.

"The Glendale Secondary Plan sets a clear path for sustainable and vibrant growth in our community,” stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “This forward-thinking framework ensures that as the community develops, we maintain the unique character and environmental integrity that make Niagara-on-the-Lake special."

The plan's development involved extensive community engagement, including public information sessions, focus group meetings, and consultations with landowners and technical experts. This collaborative approach ensured that diverse perspectives were considered, resulting in a plan that reflects the community's aspirations.

"A huge thank you to Director of Community & Development Services, Kirsten McCauley, whose leadership and dedication were instrumental in bringing this comprehensive plan to execution,” stated CAO Bruce Zvaniga. “Her commitment to inclusive and thoughtful planning has been invaluable."

The Glendale Secondary Plan is an integral part of the Town's Official Plan, providing long-term policy guidance to manage growth effectively within Glendale specifically, while preserving the area's natural beauty and community values. The Official Plan is also being updated, with community engagement opportunities available this year. Stay tuned for more information on the Town’s Join the Conversation platform
